How To Organize Your Closet & Keep It Clean

Hey friends! I think most everybody I’ve ever talked to about organizing things always mentions the dreaded closet. I always love sharing different décor and organization tips & tricks with you guys, so I knew I had to share some ideas on closet organization (and maybe prove that you don’t need to spend $$$ on organizing your closet)! Included in this post are my best tips on keeping your closet clean, organized and a place that you actually enjoy being!

A little note before we jump into the tips: With these tips I’m gonna share, the size of your closet doesn’t really matter. Your closet could be big or it could be small – these tips will work for every size. Don’t get caught up in comparing your closet with other people’s closet. You probably can’t change the size of your closet in this moment, so don’t be afraid to work with what you have! You’ve totally go this!

1. Make your closet a place that you actually enjoy being.

Okay, so this really isn’t an actual organization tip, but first and foremost: make your closet a place you actually enjoy being. Hang some fun style insp on the wall, add fairy lights – just do whatever it takes to make it a place you enjoy being in. This will make it more fun to pick out your clothes and you’ll keep the space cleaner and less messy!

2. Use space saving velvet hangers.

This one is a pretty popular tip in the closet organization world – and you guys, it definitely works! I love these space saving hangers from Amazon! In addition to helping to save space, these hangers make your clothes pop and your closet look that much more organized and cohesive! I absolutely 100% recommend getting velvet hangers for your closet!

3. Utilize the space that you have.

Every closet, regardless of the size is a little different. You might have much more hanging space than you do shelf space or you might have the opposite: much more shelf space and not a lot of hanging space. If you do have that hanging space, don’t be afraid to hang everything – like even t-shirts! If you don’t have a lot of hanging space, fold everything and store it on your shelves. For all those of you who’d like more hanging storage, you could easily get a clothes hanging rack and just use it as décor in your room or closet. Here is one on Amazon that you can get in black or white that’s less than $30!

4. Conceal with bins.

You guys, this literally the secret to having an organized closet. BINS. You can literally just stash anything in them and while I’ll talk a little bit about folding the clothes in a minute (see tip #7) there is absolutely no shame in just stashing some stuff in those bins! 😉 I just got mine really cheap from Walmart (here). I’m hoping to eventually add leather pulls to them with this tutorial to make them a little more chic, but until I get there, they work great!

5. Stash your shoes someplace else if you’re tight on space.

If you’re out of space, don’t just leave your shoes on the floor! I quickly ran out of space in my closet for my shoes, so I actually just bought a couple under-bed plastic bin and put my shoes in there! It works great and I’m able to have two bins (one for the shoes I wear all the time and the other for the shoes I wear occasionally 😉). Maybe an under-bed plastic bin won’t work for you, but don’t be afraid to get creative with your shoe storage!

6. Bring in some light.

This will completely transform your entire closet in just seconds! It doesn’t have to be fancy (but it can be if you like), even just something simple will work great! If you don’t have an option to install an actual light fixture, check out this lighting idea! This will completely transform your entire closet in just seconds! 7. Fold clothes to fit the baskets or shelves.

I like to use the Marie Condo method of folding – it works perfectly and my clothes fit in the 12 x 12 bins I mentioned above (tip #4). I think that the biggest thing that you can do to make folded clothes work in your closet is to keep them folded and fold them so that they actually fit on your shelf. There is nothing worse than shoving clothes that don’t fit into bins or on the shelves.

8. Use your jewelry & accessories as décor.

I don’t know about you, but I always see all of these closets on Pinterest with perfect décor and accent pieces, which isn’t really practical for me, ha! However, before Pier1 went out I got this adorable gold jewelry holder that now stores all of my jewelry. I also have a gold tray that holds other accessories and makeup supplies. I love that they add a cute touch to my closet, while actually being functional!

9. Be honest with yourself about what you actually wear (& declutter).

I’m pretty much constantly adding new clothes to my closet and surprise: my closet isn’t getting any bigger! I actually really enjoy going through my clothes – often it helps me rediscover items that I haven’t worn in a while and also get rid of some! If your clothes are still in good condition you can either donate them or make some money with them at a reselling store or online with apps like Poshmark!

10. Regularly clean.

Aside from decluttering, actually cleaning (like wiping things down, sweeping, dusting, etc.) is super important to keep your closet feeling fresh & organized! My sister and I take turns sweeping ours out weekly, and I’m constantly picking my stuff up throughout the week!

Alright you guys, that’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed these tips and if you’d like to see more posts like this, make sure to like this post, subscribe and comment down below! 💕

  2. Those are some great tips! I am in desperate need of closet reorganization, so I’m thankful for this post! Your closet looks fabulous (but also not like the Pinterest perfect ones without a reasonable amount of clothes in them).
BTW, you can see your address in two of the pictures! (thought you might want to know…)

  3. Oh wow this was so aesthetically pleasing, I think I fell in love with it. And all of your other blog posts for that matter. I love your closet so much, and you offered some great advice. Sadly, my closet works differently, and it’s more of a cupboard than a closet lmaooo. Anyways, tip 9 is so freaking hard, because I am so indecisive, and I’m always like “what if I need this in the future?” 🤡 sigh
