Hello fellow artists! Have you ever wondered how people get those super amazing watercolor backgrounds for their art? Well look no further, today I’m going to be showing you a super easy and fun tutorial for how to get a unique watercolor background.
The great thing is, you can do this on anything, an ATC, a canvas, a piece of watercolor paper, pretty much anything you can think of!
Here’s some inspiration for what you can do with these backgrounds, all credit to Pinterest!
So today I’m going to show you how to make some of those with a super easy, and super fun tutorial! Let’s get started!
First of all I would recommend getting some watercolor paper, (if you want to make an ATC then just cut the watercolor paper into an ATC size)
And plus, it’s pretty inexpensive as well.
Next set up your work surface. For this project you’re gonna need:
- A small spray bottle filled with water.
- Watercolor paints (liquid or block is fine)
- A paintbrush.
- Some small zip lock plastic bags.
- A painting palate.
- Paper towels. (in case of spills 😉 )
Here is how my work space is set up:
So to start your going to begin painting on the plastic bag. You can mix colors, but I found the neatest results when I painted different colors on different places on the plastic bag.
Next flip the plastic bag over and press it down.
It’s OK if there’s a few drips, they actually can end up looking cool.
As you might have guessed it took me quite a few repeats to get this, but I love how it turned out!
Here’s all of them drying on my bedroom rug. XD Probably not the best drying place but I ran out of space on my desk. LOL
Here are some details of the finished project:
Feel free to add a quote or saying or anything you’d like!

This is such a cool idea Hannah! I have to try this now!
Also, what does ATC stand for? I’m pretty clueless with acronyms and stuff (for the longest time I had no clue what XD was!)

Wow…I’ve been needing some more info on exactly how to proceed with this. I’m doing illustrations w/ watercolor and the backgrounds are VERY necessary (and tricky, up to this point 😀 ) ….. Thanks for posting, Hannah!!
