How To Transition From Summer To Fall Fashion

Hey guys! I can’t believe it’s already this time of year again! In just a couple of weeks the weather will start to cool down and before we know it, we’ll be putting away our shorts & swimsuits. (crazy, right!?) I have to say though, September & October are two of my favorite months, and I might be the only one, but I love transition outfits. Pulling together an outfit that is still summery and most definitely not winter, but that has a cozy & comfy touch is my absolute favorite! In today’s post I thought I share my top tips for putting together cute & practical summer to fall transition outfits.

Add removable layers to your outfit. One of my favorite things is layering a cozy cardigan over my tee & jeans, tee & shorts or dress! You can also do this with a plaid shirt, then tie it around your waist if you get warm – both ways are super trendy and cute!

Get creative with long sleeves & shorts. If it’s too chilly to wear a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt and long pants, why not wear them with shorts!? It’s one of my favorite early fall looks and it’s absolutely just so comfy! (side note: I’m actually wearing a long sleeve shirt & shorts right now 😛) This is also a great way to extend your shorts for a little while longer.

Add booties. You probably don’t want to pull out your knee high boots right now…. at least I don’t. XD Booties are the perfect solution! They make your outfit feel more fall-ish and you can definitely wear them into the fall and winter. I particularly love paring mine with dresses and cardigans!

Try a short sleeve button up. If it’s still too warm to wear a long sleeve flannel button up, then why not try a short sleeve button up. While it usually is more of a summery style, I think you could totally make it fall with booties, jeans, a gold necklace and maybe even a cardigan.

Try a light vest. I actually just ordered a Patagonia vest (and it hasn’t arrived yet, so I couldn’t take a picture, tsk, tsk) and I’m so excited to wear it with plaid shirts for this entire season! I don’t know, it’s just something about a vest that makes your outfit more fall/ wintery and they’re cozy and cute! I also feel like they don’t really go out of style quickly!? A casual vest is definitely going to be a staple piece in my wardrobe this fall!

Add a summery vibe when it’s chilly. Maybe you live in a cold climate and it’s already super chilly outside! Obviously, you don’t want to be all cuddled up in a winter jacket, but what are you supposed to do, right!? You can totally make you outfits seem more summer & fall by adding some floral prints, flowy textures and feminine colors. Another idea would be to add a flowy floral hair scarf or a flowy skirt or top to make the outfit seem more summery, but still stay warm at the same time.

Throw in fall colors and textures when it’s still hot. On the other hand, if you live in a very warm climate where there is literally summer, summer, summer and winter, your probably don’t want to wear a lot of the traditional fall pieces. (sweaters, boots, jackets, hats, etc.) Instead, you can easily use fall colors and textures to keep cool, but still pull some fall into your outfit! Dresses and booties paired together are lifesavers for warmer fall days!

Pair a button up shirt with jean shorts. I know that I’ve talked a lot about flannel button up shirts, but they’re pretty much a fall staple… sooo… XD Here’s another one you can do for early fall or if you live in a warm climate. I love tucking in a cute button up with jean shorts, or if you don’t want to tuck it in, go ahead and tie it! Both look adorable with high waisted jean shorts!

  2. Great tips, Hannah! I just discovered that… my, I don’t even know WHAT I wore last fall besides sweaters. XD Especially for church, I mainly have skirts and long cardigans which do NOT go well together. Any tips for how to wear sweaters with skirts? Or maybe I should just wear them with longsleeves instead?

  3. Those are really great tips. I live where it’s pretty warm year round, so it still feels like summer and I just wear a T-shirt and yoga pants XD
But, I can’t wait until it cools off enough to start back wearing sweaters!
