10 Ways You Can Save Money As A Teen

Hey guys! As teens it is soooo easy to spend money isn’t it!? But at the same time, we have so much we want (or need XD) to save up for, whether that be a car, college, new phone or just life in general. Since I know that so many of us have summer jobs or are earning money in other ways this summer, I thought I’d share 10 ways you can save money as a teenager.

1. Make your coffee at home. I know, I love coffee shops too! But have you ever noticed that each coffee drink is at least $3-$4 and you can usually get the supplies to make the same coffee drink many times (unless it’s super specialty) for under $10? O.o Personally, if I’m with friends or having a treat, I’ll grab a fun coffee/tea drink or smoothie, but other than that I try to make my coffee/tea & smoothies at home.

2. Check if you can return. If you’re out shopping and aren’t sure if you want an item or want to spend that much money on it or need to buy something when out with friends, etc. just check to make sure that you can return. You often don’t even need to ask the salesperson at the register, there are typically plenty of signs.

3. Do you really need the subscription? I’m looking at you Pura Vida Monthly Club & FabFitFun Box. XD But seriously, I mean it’s only another $30, no problem, but when you add it up, if you spend $30 each month you’re spending $360 in a year. And when you spend $50 a month, you’re spending $600 in a year.

4. Don’t be afraid to shop clearance. I know, it’s not the most fun to be buying winter boots or a sweater in May, but if you already have spring clothes, don’t be afraid to stock up for October! This is especially great for more timeless pieces, that won’t go out of style in a couple months.

5. Invest in staple pieces. This kind of ties to the last sentence of the last point, but investing in your staple pieces, whether that be jeans or leggings or basic tops, etc. is so much better than buying super expensive trend pieces.

6. Drink water when eating out. Sometimes one of the most expensive costs when eating out is actually the drink. While specialty lemonades & teas & coffees are all super good, water is much healthier and much more inexpensive.

7. Do your nails at home. While I wouldn’t recommend going as far as cutting/dying your hair at home (having a well-done haircut is SUPER important in my opinion), doing your nails is something you can easily learn how to do at home and if you get good enough at it, you could even turn it into a small business.

8. Keep track of your purchases. There are so many apps out there that can help you with this one, or you could use a journal/notebook. It’s super important to really know where your money is going and how you’re spending it!

9. Think about wants vs. needs. If you’ve ever looked into any financial tips/advice, you’ve probably heard of wants vs. needs. So be honest with yourself, what do you want and what do you need? I’m not saying that you can’t ever buy anything that you just want, but definitely take into consideration what you want and what you actually need.

10. Avoid impulse buys. I know, it’s much easier said than done! As a general rule of thumb, if I’m considering buying something over $100 (or so) I’ll wait a couple of days, because often the initial excitement will wear off, and I’ll realize that I don’t really want the said item.

I hope these tips will be helpful for you guys and if you have any ways you like to save money, make sure to let me know in the comments below! 🙂

❤ Hannah

  1. Great post! I’m not a huge spender, but I also have a lot of larger purchases I’d like to make sometime soon, so these are all great tips :))

  2. Great tips! I typically have a base price on things like clothes or accessories. Like, if I’m at a department store and I see a dress that’s $50. I know that I really only like to spend $10-$20 on a dress, so I’ll pass on the $50 one unless I really love it.

  3. These are excellent tips, Hannah! One of my favorites was the one about drinking water instead of lemonade, tea, etc. I always love getting lemonade at restaurants, but you can actually get water for free! 🙂 At least restaurants are supposed to give you water for free. Also the “keep track of purchases” one is super helpful. *nods*

    1. Thank you so much, Allison! I know, and it’s healthier too, so win-win, right!? Haha yeah, I’ve found that most do give water for free unless it’s bottled. 😉

  4. Excellent post! I love all of your tips.
One thing I like to do is consider if my money could be spent better elsewhere – advancing God’s kingdom, blessing/providing for others… it’s prevented some impulsive purchases. 🙂

  5. Nice tips!! I should totally start using these…Well, I don’t have a lot of money…so I haven’t been buying anything, but I totally agree about waiting to purchase things!! Too often I see something that I really want at first sight, but after awhile I realize that I don’t really need or want whatever it was.
    Thanks again for the tips!

  6. Ohhh! I definitely need these tips… *glances nervously at wallet* I will say, since I have not been going in any stores lately, I am realizing just how many impulse purchases I made! 😛 Lovely post! ❤
