7 Study Tips To Kick Off 2nd Semester

Hey guys! I don’t know about you, but it’s crazy to think that 1st semester is already over! I start my 2nd semester next Monday, January 13, so I thought I’d share some things I learned not to do from last semester. I’ll also be sharing some things I’m excited about this semester as well as some extra tips & tricks!

1. Don’t Let Yourself Fall Behind. This was definitely something I learned the hard way last semester. I wasn’t understanding math very well, so I let myself get wayyy behind. Then I ended up spending a lot of my winter break catching up. Thankfully I still ended up getting an A in the class, but waiting until the last minute created a lot of unnecessary stress, and is not a method I’d recommend.

2. Focus On Understanding, Rather Than Just Passing. I know that there is always the temptation to just learn the information, but really not know what is going on. Honestly, so much builds on what you last learned, and if you don’t learn it now, chances are that you’ll have to re-learn it later.

3. Be A Good Student. Okay, so I know this is kind of obvious, but it’s true. If you’re obviously working hard, turning in your work on time, being respectful to your teachers and other students, people can’t help but notice that. Being kind, respectful and friendly, even when you are feeling stressed and tired (which seems to be a common theme in high school) is a good habit to create this semester.

4. Write Important Information In Your Notebook, Do Practice Problems On A Dry Erase Board. This is a very practical tip, but at the same time, it’s so helpful that I just couldn’t resist sharing it. I used to write everything in my notebook, which made it impossible to easily review information when studying for a test. When I started using my notebook only to write down actual notes from the class, formulas and other important info, I was able to find things SO MUCH BETTER!

5. Always Submit Your Best Work. I’ll be honest, I don’t always do this. Sometimes it’s easier to just submit something that isn’t your best because you know that you’ll still get a B or an A- on it, and since you already have a 97, it doesn’t really matter. But let me tell you, grades in high school actually do matter. So try your best, and if you’re submitting your best work, you will most likely be getting a good grade.

6. Keep A Word Doc With Formulas On It. It seems like every few days I learn a new formula for Science or Math. I definitely write these down in my notebook, but sometimes it’s nice to have a quicker and easier way to locate these, rather than flipping through an entire notebook. I currently have a Word Document on my computer with my Science and Math formulas, and it’s been super helpful. I know on the state tests you also have a formula sheet (at least I do) so you could also look at that to help you!

7. Keep Your Life Balanced. I know, school is super important, and I know that your grades and participation in high school often determine what college you end up getting into. But don’t let school be the only thing you do. Have fun with friends, take time for yourself, grow in your relationship with God and enjoy life! Don’t get me wrong, you need to study, and study hard, but don’t let that be the only thing you spend time on.

I hope these tips will be helpful for your 2nd semester! What year of high school are you currently in? Do you have any study tips for me?

💙 Hannah

  1. These tips are helpful and your photography is, as always, so pretty! 🙂 I really agree with the one about not falling behind – once you do, it’s usually really difficult to catch back up. My tip is to keep track of assignments and due dates in a homework planner, it’s so helpful to see everything holistically and be sure you’re doing everything you need to!

    1. Aww, thank you, Ava! That’s a great tip, it’s so helpful to see everything laid out like that. I actually do an online school program, and it does that automatically! 🙂

  4. These are great tips, Hannah!! I’m definitely going to try them. I’m currently in 9th grade and I start the 2nd semester on the 28th! One tip that I have (it’s not necessarily a study tip, but it applies!) is to stay organized. Normally what I like to do is write out my assignments for the week on my big whiteboard and mark off when I complete something. This helps me to stay on track! And if I finish all of my assignments for the day early, I start working on the assignments for the next day. Organization and staying ahead is key!
