American Girl Clothing DIY’s!!!

Hello everyone! I have had a few requests for this post and it has taken me a while to get up, so I decided to skip Paint and Pens and do this instead!

Today we are  gonna make a super cute skirt and infinity scarf out of an old long sleeved t-shirt! And a really cute jumper dress! These projects are super easy to make, but they do require some sewing machine experience!

Lets get started with the skirt!

So for the skirt and scarf I used one of my moms old long sleeved shirt sleeves. It was actually really easy to do (I have made some doll clothes that take hours to finish, this takes 10 minutes)IMG_4161

Anyway, you could have a long maxi skirt, a medium length skirt or a shorter skirt. Or any size in the middle! So measure your doll and see how long to make your skirt! (I measured from the top of the underwear on my doll) And I decided to make a medium length skirt! (another important thing is to make sure that the shirt sleeve fits your dolls waist, measure by slipping the doll into the shirt sleeve)

So once you have measured your doll you are ready to cut! You need to add about 1/2 an inch to your final length measurement! This allows room for sewing! 🙂IMG_4149

The next step is to fold your fabric! Start by turning your fabric inside out (which means that the other hem at the top should be facing out!) Fold the unhemmed edge of the fabric 1/2 an inch over. Pin to help keep the fabric in place!

There should be a little piece of your sewing machine that is removable so that you can sew in the round. If you  have that feature then be sure to remove it!

Slip your fabric onto the sewing machine (make sure that it does not stretch when you slip it on!!!)IMG_4155

Now using a zig-zag stitch sew around the edge of the fabric slowly and carefully!

That is it! When you are finished sewing simply turn the piece right side out and put it on your doll!!!!

I also made a sweet little infinity scarf using the same technique! And I tied a scrap piece of the knit fabric together for a little hair wrap!!

Here are some photo’s:

Now the next thing that we will be making is a jumper dress/shirt! It is super easy to make and there are no sleeves involved! I used about 1/2 of a fat quarter to make it!

Begin by cutting a 14″ by 8-12″ piece of fabric (if you want a dress do the 12″ if you want a skirt then do the 8″)

Press both of the long sides of the fabric!

And sew

Once that is finished you are going to attach the Velcro to the piece!

You can use stick on Velcro or sew on Velcro. I am actually using a Velcro that sticks in place but you still have to sew around it, as it does not hold up to frequent use!

So whether your Velcro sticks on or needs to be sewn on simply just stick or sew to both ends of the fabric! (Make sure that one of the pieces of Velcro is on the wrong side of the fabric and the other is on the right side. This way they can actually work!IMG_4174

Time to tackle the straps!  Begin by cutting two, 3″ by 6″ pieces of fabric (the length can be adjusted later) use the pictures below to help you with the ironing!

Once you have ironed both straps, sew a zig-zag stitch along the middle of both straps!

Now it is time to attach both straps to the dress! Find the middle of the large, dress piece. Mark with chalk, and pin both straps into place.

My straps are about an inch apart in the center.

Stitch in place, don’t forget to backstitch!IMG_4180

Now put the dress on your doll and measure how long the straps need to be, make sure they do not droop to much but also make sure they aren’t too tight! This is super important! Mark your measurement with chalk!

Sew up in the back and you are finished! Here are some pictures:

I think that Grace looks so pretty in it!
